Nebraska Governor to Sign Abortion Bill into Law

OMAHA (KPTM)- Tuesday Nebraska will become the first state in the country that will require doctors to screen women for possible mental and physical problems before performing an abortion.

"We've worked on this bill for quite a long time so we're excited to see it pass," Ann Marie Bowen, President of Nebraskans United for Life said.

"This is what we need to do until we can eradicate abortion altogether by abortionists who care less about their patients' trauma."

But abortion rights activists like Planned Parenthood believe the bill isn't truly about informing women of about possible problems after they get an abortion.

"It's about dissuading women and creating barriers. It's ideologically driven instead of medically driven," Julie Stauch said.

Planned Parenthood employees also believe the information doctors now have to provide will only confuse women even more.

"It's cumbersome. It's confusing and it doesn't help them reach a better solution," Penny Dickey, Planned Parenthood's Chief Operation Officer said.

Governor Heineman is expected to sign the bill at 2:30 Tuesday.
