Memorial to Mall Victims Grows

Posted: Updated:

Omaha (KPTM) - Five days after the Westroads shootings, healing and reflection continued to be on the minds of many across the metro. A lot of people went to funerals and visitations of victims Monday afternoon. Many more expressed their support near the crime scene.

Waves of people remembered and honored those who died last week by adding to a makeshift memorial outside the Von Maur store. For days people brought candles, flowers and signs. As of Monday evening, the south entrance to Von Maur was completely full.

"It's just a sad time for our city and our state," said memorial visitor Rick Griencewic. "I think it helps me personally and helps every one who comes out here to start that healing process." he continued.

Healing is exactly what one mother had in mind Monday. Jennie Dunham brought her four year old daughter who tried to make sense of what happened. "It's sad," said four year old Kaitlyn. "She said we need to take flowers out there," her mother added.

Inside Westroads Mall, another memorial grew Monday. Paper snowflakes lined the blocked off entrance to Von Maur. Thousands of messages of hope and rememberance could be scene just feet from where eight victims were killed.

Von Maur released a statement Monday about its eventual reopening. No date is set yet. The retailer said it is taking, "prudent steps to reopen the store," at the appropriate time.
