OMAHA (KPTM) – Dozens gathered for the John Atkinson Lung Cancer Foundation's Shine-A-Light Lung Cancer Vigil Tuesday night.

This was the first year for the vigil. The goal of the evening was to raise awareness on a cancer the organization says in the shadow.

"Whether we get 10 people or 50 people we are putting out a message that lung cancer is a leading killer, awareness needs to be there, funding needs to be there and research dollars need to be there," Lore Atkinson said.

Lori lost her husband John to lung cancer in 2009. She believes there is a stigma associated with lung cancer; many believe in order to get lung cancer you must be a smoker.

"He (John) was a non-smoker, diagnosed at age 37 and we have no idea how he got lung cancer," she said.

She encourages others to share their lung cancer stories so awareness grows. There were other lung cancer vigils held across the country.

The John Atkinson Lung Cancer Foundation gives scholarships to kids who have lost a parent to lung cancer.
