A popular riverfront restaurant in Omaha is closing its doors, for now.
The Owner of Rick's Boatyard Café , Rick Albrecht, met with Omaha City Attorney, Paul Kratz, Thursday to discuss changes for the restaurant.
A sign on the door says the restaurant is closed for remodeling until the spring. Kratz says, however, that the restaurant isn't making ends meet. Albrecht has missed rent, and owes tens of thousands of dollars in property taxes.
"Over the years, I think you could see that he was struggling, and at some point I knew it had to come to this," said Kratz.
Kratz says they discussed various things regarding the future of the restaurant, though nothing is official.
"As far as the city taking it back and putting it up for bid again, all the way to him re branding it, perhaps even bringing in another operator, there's a lot of things that could happen at this point."
Kratz says the goal for the city is to keep a restaurant at the site, most likely with a different concept.
Boxer BBQ in Council Bluffs, on the other hand, is making changes but is not closed down. It was featured in FOX 42s Secret Hot Spots, located near 8th and Broadway.
Owner Jim Mohatt says he needs more time away from the restaurant. "I was putting in 120 hours a week, I don't think in 5 year our pit has gone below 120 degrees. We're just trying to re-gear to where we get to work a sensible, civilized life and that everybody continues to get great BBQ."
Mohatt closed down the dining room for good, but is taking on a BBQ store format, with take out and catering.
Mohatt says you can still order in his BBQ and pick it up with some advanced notice. He also will have meat for sale for walk in customers.
The dining room will also be rented out for special occasions.
