Student Housing Comes Under Fire

OMAHA (KPTM) – Campus Crest Communities Inc. has put together plans to build a $25 million student housing apartment complex near 69th and Cass.

The plan includes 10 apartment buildings with 200 apartments. The building could hold anywhere from 500 to 600 students.

City Councilman Pete Festersen represents the district and he is worried about the plans. If the plan were passed it would replace Temple Israel, a synagogue. The congregation will be moving to west Omaha. This is a busy intersection.

Bob Foster has lived in the area for 17 years. He too is worried about the added traffic.

"That seems like a lot, a lot of apartments given the space and the location," he said.

The area is also part of the Crossroads Mall blighting. Plans are still in the works to make improvements to the mall. A meeting will be held Thursday at the Old Navy inside the mall. The meeting will start at 6:30.

Councilman Festersen tells Fox 42 News the plan could be formal introduced to the Omaha Planning Board on March 6th.
