OMAHA (KPTM)-Three little boys were charged with trying to sexually assault a little girl on an Omaha schools playground.

Monday, the Omaha Public School board talked about changing its policies about how to report such things to police.

It's a note from the Principal Cori Fitzgerald never thought she'd read. "Just finding out a week ago is just, it does make me nervous."

According to police, three eight year old boys pinned down a nine year old girl at the Belvedere playground and attempted to sexually assault her. Police said other students saw, and tried to stop the attack.

"(Safety)You don't want to play with, it's something you need to take immediate action with," said Fitzgerald.

Current OPS policy says that sexual harassment incidents need to be reported within 24 hours.

"It's very important that the law enforcement gets involved as soon as they can, so why wait?" said Douglas County Attorney, Don Kleine.

In a letter to parents, the principal of Belvedere wrote that "student safety is a top priority," and that "recent media reports have generated questions."

"We do trust our kids to the school three-fourths of their day, and that's a big trust," said Fitzgerald.

On Monday, Kleine spoke with school board members about the reporting policy.

"We would like to see it be immediately so there wouldn't be any question about when did you do it," said Kleine.

"It should have been already talked about, but a lot of times, it takes something for a lot of people's eyes to be opened," said Fitzgerald.

OPS officials said the meeting wasn't the result of a particular incident, but rather several school board members brought up the issue.
