OMAHA (KPTM) - A judge has refused bond to a teenager accused of beating and raping an elderly woman that led to her death.
Sergio Perez, 19, made a brief appearance in jail court Friday afternoon to learn what he's up against. That's when he found out from a judge his charge has been upgraded to first-degree murder and could face life in prison.
Federal authorities are also now looking into whether or not Perez is even in the country legally as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement questions his status.
"He shouldn't have even been here in the first place if he was an illegal," said Joe Sollowin, the son of 93-year-old victim, Louise Sollowin.
For now, Perez will wait for his preliminary hearing set for August 12th.
As for the Sollowin family, a memorial fund has been set up in Louise's memory. Anyone interested in donating to help with expenses can send money to the Louise Sollowin Memorial Fund at any American National Bank.
Funeral services for Sollowin are scheduled for Saturday.
