Dog Owners Charged After Pit Bulls Attack Dog

OMAHA (KPTM)- "One, two, three, four," counted Harriette Luttrell.

Luttrell's golden retriever Denver is a family dog.

"My hand was just inches away from all of this and blood was starting already to squirt," remembered Luttrell.

Luttrell was checking on her neighbor's home over Labor day weekend while he was out of town. "I had no idea these dogs were even coming to attack us."

She said she was walking on one side of the house when two pit bulls ran and lunged at Denver. "(My) dog just give that sigh, that give up feeling, I saw him just go down on his knees and they were just at his throat, not giving up," said Luttrell.

She said she unhooked Denver's leash to get him to run, but by that time he was already on the ground. "I felt helpless."

Luttrell said she screamed for help, when a neighbor took a snow shovel and hit the two dogs. "I heard this big bang and all of a sudden the dogs let go of Denver, and Denver dropped to the ground, I thought he was dead.

She said she and her daughter rushed Denver to a local animal emergency clinic. The visit cost them $1,700, not including the medication she's been giving Denver.

"I don't somebody else's dog to go through what I had to go through," said Luttrell.

The two owners of the dogs are charged with harboring a dangerous animal and not having vaccinations, insurance, a muzzle, and a harness.

Luttrell said she's spoken to one owner about a payment plan. "He did seem to take responsibility."

A judge will decide in October if the two dogs will be euthanized.
