Major Resurfacing Project Delays Drivers, Impacts Businesses

OMAHA(KPTM)- Some drivers are choosing to ditch Dodge Street, at least the section of it between 52nd Street and Turner Boulevard. The busy section of road usually accommodates five lanes of traffic, but for the next eight weeks only two lanes- one in each direction- will be open to drivers as city crews resurface the roadway.

Many drivers say getting to where they want to go is taking them longer, even while using alternate routes recommended by the city. Meanwhile, access to some businesses along Dodge is limited.

Varsity Bar and Grill near 49th and Dodge is taking advantage of having slowed traffic in front of their establishment by offering food and drink specials.  "We've done all we can to promote our business and like I said, it's a blessing in disguise," said manager Ashley Bourke who added that Varsity does have to make some adjustments "My kitchen manager was in at 7:30 this morning, where normally he'd be in around 8:30, you know, it's just overcoming those little obstacles," added Bourke.

Not every restaurant manager in the new construction zone is as optimistic as Bourke. Two other eateries located closer to Turner Blvd and a little bit off of the road way say they're worried customers won't be able to reach them easily enough and it could mean slower business than usual.
