Kids Earn Local Radio Show Host Spots

Posted: Updated:

OMAHA (KPTM)- Being persistent. It pays off in the sports world. For two young and aspiring kids, the dividend is making on the radio.

Parker Thune, 14, and Grant Hansen, 11 had a dream of hosting a sports talk radio show. After trying and failing, they got their shot.

"Grant and Parker sent me a compelling email," said Greg Vogt, General Manager of KCRO Radio on Omaha. "It was compelling. It explained why they thought they would be good on the radio doing a sports segment."

It led to an audition and then they were surprised when Vogt told them they were going to go live on the air in  five minutes.

"They did a good job, they were prepared and conversational," said Vogt.

"We sent emails to other stations. One F-M station and they rejected us kind of rudely," said Hansen.

"We were rejected a few times before KCRO called," said Thune.

The young broadcasters go by "Peyton and Leighton" on the air.

The pair of loquacious adolescents give opinions, analysis, and predictions every Monday on KCRO during the station's drive time show "KCRO Today" starting at 5 p.m.

They were hoping to get a public access audience, but wound up on a 1000 watt station that carries a signal from Grand Island to Des Moines and from Sioux City to St. Joseph, Missouri.

"We want to grow from a 25 minute segment to an hour and then two hours and then one day go national," said Hansen.

"Having a national show some day would be a dream come true," said Thune
