OMAHA (KPTM)-They fought for their country, now they're battling the elements. The V.A. estimates about a hundred to a hundred fifty veterans in the Omaha metro may be homeless on any given night.

He once wore Army fatigues. Now Jacob Hustede's uniform includes a backpack.

"We dress in layers," said Hustede, a homeless veteran who also wears a stocking cap and carries with him a pair of warm gloves.

Hustede says one of the most valuable items in his bag is his guide to veterans benefits. Finding out he qualified for free housing gave Hustede hope.

"There really is a lot out there and I don't think a lot of people know about this stuff," said Hustede who will soon be moving into the Victory Apartments.

The building's ninety units are being used to house veterans who are eligible for V.A. healthcare benefits. Section eight vouchers take care of a majority of the rent.

"To know I'll have a place to go every night will make it easier for me to find a job because that's one less thing to worry about," said Hustede, who plans to make his move within the next week or so.

The Victory Apartments were designed to help chronically homeless veterans find apartments. According to the V.A., efforts like this one have led to a 36-percent decrease in homeless veterans in the Omaha metro since 2009.
