Sizing Up Health Care for Students

Posted: Updated:

OMAHA(KPTM)-As the deadline to get covered or face a penalty nears. Students are looking into their health insurance options.

Marcia Adler has served as the Director of Health Services at the University of Nebraska-Omaha for the past fourteen years. Adler says during that time she's gotten a lot of questions from students and lately inquiries have been about the Affordable Care Act - which is also known as Obamacare. "People are a little more conscientious about 'do I have insurance?' 'should I have insurance?','what are the obligations?," said Adler.

U.N.O. students have access to basic care like doctor visits through the University for a fee of just seven dollars a semester. If students want more extensive care to help pay for the big ticket items like hospital stays they have to buy a separate plan. "We run the numbers every year and about forty percent of students that use U.N.O. for their primary care- these are American students- have no health insurance," said Adler.

Starting in 2014, those students will be required to have coverage whether they purchase it through their school, the Marketplace, or qualify under their parents' plan - an option for those under 26.

Adler says U.N.O. offers students a plan that meets new government requirements and costs students under 25 around a hundred dollars a month. Students report estimates found on to be in that ball park. Rates for both options vary depending on age and other factors.

For those worried about how they're going to afford the premiums, help is available for those who meet the requirements.
