ELKHORN (KPTM) - Thanksgiving traditionally means spending time with family, but for the elderly making it home is sometimes a real challenge.
"It wouldn't be a family function if we didn't have her here," said Nancy Peters of Omaha.
Peters is talking about her mother, the matriarch of the family, who now lives at a care center in West Omaha and doesn't get out much, but with the help of Midwest Medical Transport (and the blessing of the care center) she got a ride home to spend the holidays with her family.
"I couldn't ask for better," said a tearful Barbara Nelson. "It's just like a gift."
Midwest Medical Transport, a private ambulance company, has been providing free rides home for people like Nelson for the past three years. This Thanksgiving they were able to spread a little holiday cheer to more than 70 families.
"There's nothing like going home and hugging your family and telling them you love them," said Nelson.
