OMAHA (KPTM)- "One out of two teens will have used an illegal drug by the time they graduate high school," said Gwynne Wilson of Drug Test Services.
It's an alarming statistic that Wilson wants parents to know.
"It's important to be proactive and to be aware of their children, their surroundings, and who they hang out with," added Wilson.
She practices what she preaches. She has two teen daughters and she has tested both of them for drugs. One used and the other did not. That's exactly the national statistics.
"No parent is immune from having a child who is using drugs," said Wilson
Wilson is concerned about the new drugs to the teen scene, namely K-2 Spice.
"It does not mimic marijuana or cocaine. The side affects are hallucinations, heart palpitations and it can cause great harm. We had one Child who tried it just once and was in a mental ward for six weeks," said Wilson
One child died from using K-2 recently.
"Our daughter told us that she had incense and I know it wasn't incense. So I went on line and called around to find a place that would drug test her for K-2," said one Omaha mother who wants to remain anonymous to protect her daughter who was 16 at the time of her first test.
She is now 18 and staying away from drugs.
Both mothers are part of a growing number of parents who are drug testing their teens at home.
