OMAHA (KPTM) - It seems people are using every trick in the book these days when trying to sneak drugs through Omaha and other Nebraska communities.

"Sometimes they'll try to hide stuff in car wheels or they'll build special compartments," said Jeff Davis, Sarpy County's sheriff.

On Monday, a 23-year-old woman was taken into custody after a Douglas County K-9 unit found piles of marijuana in a suitcase.  All 57 pounds of it had been stuffed into a hatch of a Ford Escape.

"Every time you think you've seen it all there's always something else that happens."

Despite the discovery, Sheriff Davis reports no dramatic rise in marijuana smugglers.  Most of it he says remains out west near the Nebraska panhandle as the impact of Colorado's new law, the legalization of marijuana for recreational use, is now beginning to take somewhat of a stronghold.

"They'll probably see much more of an increase first," said Davis.

That doesn't mean, however, other departments aren't taking notes the farther into Colorado's new law we go.

"Obviously, they're learning and we're going to learn from them, too."

Coincidentally, the Sarpy County Sheriff's Department is in line to get a second drug sniffing dog.  It's expected to join the force as early as the next three to four months.
