OMAHA (KPTM) - Benson High School can stay in the uppermost athletics class for at least one more year.
The Nebraska School Activities Association voted 6-2 Thursday to stop a one-month old rule that would have prevented schools like Benson from opting up into Class A; a decision students, staff and alums see as a victory.
"It's great. I love it," said Douglas Jennings, a 1996 Benson alum.
Last month, the Activities Association board determined something different. It decided that schools like Benson belonged in a lower class because of dwindling enrollment numbers; a judgment that put alums like Jennings on edge.
"Back in the day when Omaha Tech was kind of in the same situation they got moved to Class B and then they eventually closed them and we kind of felt that was going to be the same thing that was going to happen to us."
There is, however, one catch. Benson football is slated to end up in Class B. It's a disappointment for some, but for others Thursday's ruling was a positive first step.
"With this appeal, this is breathing new life into Benson," said Jennings.
A plan is now in the works to help boost Benson's enrollment. The Omaha Public School District says it's still working out all the fine details.
