Police Cadet Nearly Sliced in Half Suffers Setback in Recover

Posted: Updated:

HARLINGEN, TX (KPTM)- At only 22, Ray Benitez has endured the worst days of his life.

His mom Edith first told us about Ray's horrific freak accident in January after he had been hospitalized since November. He was cleaning blades on a trencher when he got caught by it and his torso nearly sliced in half.

After extensive surgeries, Ray made a miraculous recovery and as seen in these pictures, was doing exceptionally well in his therapy, but things quickly took a turn for the worse.

Edith says her son had to be opened up again, virtually destroying all the work his body had done to heal.

It's now been four months that Ray has been hospitalized and he will once again start therapy to be able to move around.

At just 105 pounds down from 170, Ray remains optimistic and still plans to finish with police academy to become a police officer in the valley.
