PAPILLION (KPTM) - The metro's newest firefighters learned important life-saving techniques Thursday.

Practicing on mannequins, the stakes were high with every second so crucial.  During an afternoon class, there was no room for error with the experts watching the new hires like hawks.  In real life, actual people would replace the mannequins and it would become a matter of life and death.

"Anytime you have someone's life possibly in the balance, there's always a little bit of stress involved there," said Bret Desh.

Desh is one of 12 new firefighters set to begin once the Papillion-La Vista fire merger becomes official.  What he practiced Thursday will undoubtedly be a valuable learning experience.

"Training like this helps us keep our heads and do what we have to do," said Desh.

It's the kind of training especially vital when babies are involved.  The responders must be prepared for anything and everything.

"You have to try to have as much confidence as you can because a lot of that goes out the window whenever you leave the station because you don't know what's going to happen and you're not going to know until you arrive on the scene," said Matt Hyland, a new firefighter.

That's why training now will go a long way toward preventing heartache later.

The Papillion-La Vista fire merger officially takes effect April 1st.
