Phone Scam Has Phonies Pretending to be Police

OMAHA (KPTM)- A scam on April Fool’s Day didn't trick one Omaha woman, butit almost did.  She got a call from someone who pretended to be from theDouglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the scammer told the woman she missed jury duty and owed a$500  fine. She was told to go to a local pharmacy to send money with apre-paid debit card.

The woman found out  that the courtsand the sheriff had nothing to do with the call. When she tried calling thescammer back, she didn't get an answer.

Deputies said that they will never call people to have them pay fines.Deputies said they also don't ask people to use pre-paid cards or similar typesof payment methods.
