OMAHA (KPTM) - Family medical clinics nationwide, including Omaha, are discovering a troubling new trend.

"It's a pretty big misunderstanding," said Marie Savine, a local office manager.

That misunderstanding comes from new customers who think their health insurance covers more than it actually does.

"People are mistakenly thinking that whatever they get at the doctor's office is going to be covered at 100 percent."

Savine expects that confusion to linger as people try to figure out Obamacare, so here's something to keep in mind the next time you visit your doctor:

You are usually covered if you go in for screening, counseling or tests that are meant to prevent rather than treat health problems.

You risk paying out of pocket, however, if your doctor diagnoses a new condition or monitors a condition you already have.

"If your insurance says that you have a $500 deductible or a $10,000 deductible, they'll process it as a covered benefit, but you might owe the entire visit," said Savine.

If you have any doubts about what services are covered, it's a good idea to call your doctor's office to check.  You can also call the phone number listed on the back of your Member ID card and speak to someone there.
