OMAHA(KPTM)-Police often find themselves in life-threatening situations, but in February, one Omaha Police Department officer lost his life to a common enemy, the H1N1 flu virus. On Sunday, friends and co-workers of Officer Greg Hamill, who lost his life to the illness in February, gathered to raise money for the family he left behind.

Officer Kevin Housh was one of many who showed up to the fundraiser at the Omaha Police Union Hall to raise cash through auctions, raffles, food and drinks. "You don't know how many friends you have until stuff like this happens," said Housh of the event's large turnout.

Attendee Madison Pratt knows first-hand how important these events can be to show support to the family and friends of fallen officers. Pratt lost her own father a decade ago when she was three, she says support from the O.P.D. community helped her family get through the tragedy. "He was a police officer and he was killed in the line of duty and they helped us through a traumatic time, so we're just glad to be here and help them out," said Pratt.

Also in attendance, Nebraska State Senator Pete Pirsch, who worked with Hamill when Pirsch was a prosecutor for the Douglas County Attorney's office, and Hamill, an officer he often coordinated with. Sen. Pirsch applauds Hamill's dedication to the community.  "He was very friendly to all, very much committed to protecting the public," said Pirsch.

If you didn't attend the event, but still want to help out Hamill's family, you can donate to a memorial fund set up at the Omaha Police Credit Union under the name of his wife, Vanessa Hamill.
