OMAHA (KPTM)- A man was arrested early Friday morning for trying to steal copper from a burned down building, according to Omaha police.
According to reports, Russell Rawson tried to run away from the scene when police arrived, but was caught a block later.
Police said Rawson was trying to steal copper and scrap metal from the former Keystone Pharmacy on 72nd and Maple. A huge fire destroyed the entire building Sunday night.
"We did happen to catch somebody else cruising around our parking lot as somebody else was stealing copper," said Justin Dryben.
Dryben works next door to the destroyed building and said his surveillance videos captured a black pickup truck speeding off of their parking lot when police arrived.
"There are thousands of dollars of scrap metal in there as well," said Dryben.
Dryben said people have been driving around the building non-stop since it burned down Sunday night.
"We were expecting to see some sort of security guard or anything guarding the area," said Dryben.
Dryben said as long as the remains of the building sit next door, he'll keep an eye out for anything suspicious.
Rawson is facing charges of theft and obstructing a peace officer.
