OMAHA (KPTM) - Wreckage from tornadoes in Arkansas and Mississippi is a reminder that severe weather season is underway, so are the warnings about staying safe when a storm hits.

"People believe that (tornado) sirens should be heard in every location and everywhere and that's not true," said Paul Johnson, emergency director for Douglas County.  "Those are designed for the outside and not necessarily for an interior."

That's why safety experts recommend keeping an alternate warning system handy.

"It's important for people to realize there are multiple means of notification," said Johnson.

Notifications like mobile apps, for example.  From her iPad, safety expert Melissa Hoeman of Albers Communications Group showed FOX 42 News the importance of having them.

"You can get more advanced radar data and they're reliable," said Hoeman.

The American Red Cross even has a feature with an "I'm Safe" button.  It allows you to let friends and family know how you're doing.

"It's kind of a one stop shop for anything you could need following the disaster," said Hoeman.

The Department of Homeland Security also has recommendations for staying safe.  To check them out, click here:
