OMAHA (kptm) - Police are asking for your help finding the crooks responsible for a huge heist in Omaha.

The thieves targeted a business that services semi-trucks.  Investigators said they stole dozens of expensive truck tires.

The manager said the thieves were bold.  They committed the crime right next door to the Omaha Police impound lot.

The manager at Bauer Built Tire said the crooks got through the fence by cutting open the chain around the lock.  They tried to cut open the lock, but couldn’t.  They then pushed open the fence, drove their truck right through and had free access to all the tires.  “I think they kind of cased us, they knew what they were looking for, waited for the right time to do it.”

Manager Steve Quinn said the crooks came at night.  They stole nearly $100,000 worth of tires from his lot.    All of which were brand new.  “I’m impressed with how well they did it.  I mean they knew what they were looking for.  We have a couple different types of tires here, they didn’t take a certain type of tire, retreaded tire, they didn’t take them.”

He said the retreaded tires have a serial number, making them easy to trace.  “They walked right by them in the dark in our containers where it’s very hard to see, so they only took new tires, so they had a pretty good idea of what they were looking for.”

He said the crooks busted the locks off 8 of his intermodal shipping containers.  The doors are extremely heavy to open and once they got inside they stole all the tires that were along the wall and it wasn’t easy, he said each of the truck tires weighs more than 100 pounds.  “They’re heavy and they’re awkward and they’re hard to pick up and they had to get them all up on a truck and you have to get them in the truck in some sort of organizational fashion so you get a lot in there, they had to be here an hour.”

To top it off, he said the crooks knew what they were doing.  You can’t really see it behind the tires, but there’s a fence that they cut a hole through.  A chance for the crooks to getaway in case the cops showed up.

The manager said he’s willing to pay a reward to anyone with information.

Police said the crooks stole two rental trucks from a business nearby to haul the tires away.  Those trucks are still missing.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 444-STOP.
