SERGEANT BLUFF, IA (KPTM) - It might have been Labor Day Monday, but people in this small community north of Omaha were working to clean up their neighborhoods.

"There's tree damage in everyone's yard I think," said Debbie Evernham, who lives in Sergeant Bluff.  "It's unreal."

A powerful thunderstorm Sunday night caught her and her neighbors off guard.

"There were no sirens.  I didn't hear any go off," said Evernham.

Around 5:00 P.M. she remembers how the weather was find one minute, then ugly the next.

"It sounded like a train coming through because it was hail, wind and rain all at once."

It's the worst storm some people in Sergeant Bluff said they've ever seen.  In addition to trees down, power lines were also down and entire neighborhoods were blocked off.

"Came back up, went out the back door and it looked like a war zone," recalled Tim Rieckhoff-Faris, also of Sergeant Bluff.

His family was also busy Monday cleaning up debris from Sunday's thunderstorm.

"I think we're making progress," said Rieckhoff-Faris.  "People are working all over town and huge groups of people are working in some people's yards, so I'd say by the end of the week things will look good."

A powerful storm also tore through nearby Dakota City, Nebraska.  People in the area say some good samaritans came from more than an hour away to help with cleanup efforts.
