Tye Murphy, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion and Howard County Native, Won Two Gold Medals at the Prestigious IBJJF Atlanta International Open of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Baltimore, MD (PRWEB) September 02, 2014

Tye Ryan Murphy defeated four opponents this past Saturday to claim first place in two competitive divisions at the prestigious Atlanta International Open of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Murphy, a Brown Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, usually competes in the Middleweight division (181.5 lbs and below). For this competition, he bumped up one weight class to the Medium Heavy category (195 lbs and below).

"Fighting in the higher weight class allows me to focus on grappling rather than on dieting and cutting weight," says Murphy.

After winning the Medium Heavy division earlier in the day, Murphy also competed in the Open division - where the top 3 place-winners of all the divisions take part. Murphy defeated two more opponents there before entering the finals. The finals were won via Gentleman's Agreement because the other finalist was also his teammate and Tye ended up with Gold.

Tye Murphy has been on a winning streak, having competed just a week earlier at the Boston International Open, where he also won Gold. In 2013, Murphy won Gold at the World Championships in the Purple Belt Middleweight category, becoming the only Baltimore-area resident to ever win Gold at that level. Tye is a coach and instructor at Maryland Jiu Jitsu school, Crazy 88 Mixed Martial Arts.

The Atlanta Open is an annual competition run by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF). The IBJJF is the governing body for the major grappling tournaments in the world, including the World Championships, Pan, European Open, and the Brazilian Nationals.
